Joan-Carles Surís studied medicine and specialized in pediatrics in his hometown of Barcelona . From 1990 to 1992 he received a scholarship to do a fellowship in Adolescent Health and a Master in Public Health at the University of Minnesota (USA). Upon his return to Barcelona in 1992, he creates and directs the outpatient adolescent unit at the Institut Universitari Dexeus. Since 2003 he is the director of the research group on adolescent health (GRSA) and associated physician at the multidisciplinary unit for adolescent health (UMSA) at the university hospital in Lausanne , Switzerland .
